"THE JUVENILE" IS AT IT AGAIN

George Offerman

“If you stop telling lies about me, I’ll stop telling the truth about you”

Gordon Gekko, Wall Street: Money never sleeps

Troy “the juvenile” Newman is up to his tricks again. It seems that Troy ‘the juvenile’ Newman cannot help himself and stop his personal attacks, that are baseless and needless, in an attempt to make whatever point he is trying to make. Reading the juvenile’s press releases is reminiscent of grade school playground behavior, and it is becoming much more difficult to take this guy seriously. The juvenile claims to be one of the ‘national leaders’ of the pro life movement, and with people like the juvenile at the helm, it is very understandable to see why we are getting creamed in this war. Press release follows:

Operation Rescue makes statement that Randall Terry does not speak or have any affiliation with their organization

Group responds to Mr. Terry's plans to rip pages of the Qur'an

Washington, DC - Operation Rescue has released the following statement:

Randall Terry will be sponsoring events around the country in which pages of the Qur'an will be ripped or thrown on the ground. Operation Rescue wants to make it clear we do not condone these activities and the actions of Randall Terry in no one way speak for Operation Rescue.

After founding Operation Rescue, Randall Terry stepped down as its leader in the spring of 1990. For the past 20 years, the Rescue Movement has moved forward independently from the actions and direction of Mr. Terry. During those 20 years, Mr. Terry has chosen a path that has included negative lifestyle choices, financial mismanagement, misleading donors, and bizarre media events which in no way reflect the core principles of Operation Rescue.

Those core principles are ending the horror and violence of abortion, seeing that women are not diminished and scarred through abortion, affirming human rights for children in their mother's womb and honoring Jesus Christ by loving the most needy in our society.

Randall Terry's recent projects, such as the Nancy Pelosi burn in hell video, hanging and beating an effigy of Senator Lindsey Graham, sponsoring a "Burn the Qur'an Solidarity Rally" and now ripping pages of the Qur'an reflect the actions of a desperate person who is more interested in self-promotion and headlines than building a culture of life.

We would respectfully ask that the media makes sure to clearly state that Randall Terry has no connection with Operation Rescue and he is not affiliated with the organization.

One may wonder why I started this post with a quote from a fictional character. Well, this is rather elementary, when one considers the nature of the statement, in which Troy ‘the juvenile’ Newman makes baseless and unprovable statements to discredit Mr. Terry, because the juvenile is not making the headlines and getting the attention that a supposed national leader would get if he was actually in the war. The juvenile’s accusations are as much fiction as Gordon Gekko is, except Gordon Gekko seems to ‘get it’ about his situation, unlike the juvenile. If we take the fiction analogy further, we would get into how much fiction the juvenile used in obtaining the trademark of the organization known as operation rescue. If the juvenile is really as great as he thinks he is, he would use a name that is more reflective of his accomplishments instead of needing to steal an identity and accomplishments from another.

Yes, the juvenile is well versed in fiction, except in real life we call his tactics and behavior fraud and slander. But the juvenile lives in his own world of make believe, in which he is the hero, and all who dare question him in the least are the villains. The juvenile believes he can slander another, which by the way is sinful behavior, and come out looking like the good guy who has God ‘on my side”. The juvenile has his own ‘dirty laundry’ but has used lies, deception and character slander, such as making accusations and alleging others have diagnosed ‘mental illnesses’ that somehow he was able to access, and then publicize. The juvenile also has his share of critics that have stated the juvenile has taken credit for the accomplishments of other pro life groups when the juvenile did little to nothing in making this happen.

There are other ways the juvenile could have written the memo above, but it appears the juvenile either has no ability to ‘tone it down, and leave out personal attacks’ or has an axe to grind. Either way, the juvenile is showing the true nature of his character. And the more he exposes these character flaws, the more unbecoming the juvenile looks as a supposed national leader, as well as personally. He and Gordon Gekko would get along very well.

GROW UP TROY

George Offerman

It seems the self proclaimed ‘national’ leader for the Pro life movement has a very thin skin. I have occasionally posted on Mr. Troy Newman and his Wichita Organization over the past several months, and have received very nasty responses, that up to this point I have not published, or edited significantly when publishing. I have also donated thousands to his causes over the years believing he was the genuine ‘article’ concerning how he represented himself and the causes he has supported. Because another side has emerged (actually it has come to my attention over the past 2 years, something that those who know him well have known for some time) I decided to sever ties with Troy and his Wichita Organization about a year ago, and let him know why.

Since that time, Troy has been on the attack and has attempted to smear me, along with others, and has done this in the name of ‘Christianity” and ‘saving the babies”. Troy and his ilk have attempted to use bullying tactics that have included outright lies, and attempting to label people with diagnosed mental illnesses (I guess these are examples of his innovative ways). It is very unbecoming, as well as juvenile to resort to playground behaviors and name calling, but as I have discovered, Troy wants to play by his rules, and has no tolerance for anything or anyone who dares to challenge his ‘supreme authority’.

Below is an actual e-mail exchange, unedited from one of the supposed national leaders of the Pro life movement. It is rather sad that Mr. Newman wants to interact in the way that he does, and wants to infer that he is the ‘big dog’ in the room. There seems to be no lack of pride in this man, and Troy is the one who is constantly ‘bad mouthing’ other pro lifers and organizations that do good work that is unrelated to his Wichita organization and may actually garner some attention, taking the attention away from Troy.

G.O.

As Christians, we have a difficult enough time in recruiting other Christians for this battle, and many have rightfully pointed out how the pro life movement is fragmented, and filled with many ego maniacs who seem more interested in self promotion and fundraising than getting the job done. It is especially shameless when these same leaders who will claim to be infallible in their judgment characterizations use sinful behavior to harm another, and then use the Christian Moniker to hide behind and justify their sinful behavior. That is why the pro life movement is so stagnant now, and not really attracting the new blood and vigor it needs.

The pro life movement does not needs a self proclaimed leader who acts like an adolescent as its spokesman. The pro life movement does not need those that utilize methods like trashing others in order to look good themselves, as motives to accomplish their own narcissistic need for fame and fortune. The pro life movement does not need the constant harping about how “if you don’t fund US, then babies will die” mantra as if they have sole rights and are the only route to overturning Roe. No, the pro life movement needs visionaries that are leaders, and willing to do whatever it takes to end legalized child killing, and not be concerned about how they look in the battle.

So, from Troy’s perspective I am nothing more than a tiny gnat on a cow’s ass. I can go along with Troy’s analogy, and I will gratefully be a tiny gnat in this battle, but knowing that Troy is the cow’s ass (since he insists on being the big dog, or ‘cow’ on the national scene) gives some credence for the need to be vigilant and hold those accountable who want to make the claim they deserve the standing they have taken. My thoughts about Troy are similar of his towards me, in that in dealing with Troy, a little Preparation H will do the trick.

OTHERS ARE SAYING IT TOO

George Offerman

I have written several posts concerning the Wichita organization lead by Troy Newman, and have come under fire for it. There have been many allegations made about me and Randall Terry since that time, mainly made by those who are associated with the Wichita organization. It is becoming more apparent that as more information comes out, and more are beginning to see what this organization is all about, it is becoming obvious that the stealing of the moniker Operation Rescue is motivated by fame and money.

Tom O’Toole has written a provocative piece on this issue, and not only addresses what is seen as an opportunist taking the moniker of another man, but also the false allegations to justify taking the name, and by extension, issues of integrity with Mr. Newman.

http://www.renewamerica.com/columns/otoole/100301

In this piece, Mr. O’Toole discusses Mr. Terry’s history in the pro life movement and proposes the question “Is Randall Terry fit for the Pro life movement?” It would seem that as the article progresses on, that Mr. O’Toole comes to the conclusion that most of the charges levied at Mr. Terry, are exaggerated and in some cases, outright lies. Much of what has been alleged by Mr. Terry’s accusers can be dismissed rather easily by anyone taking the time to do an internet search, or talking to those who have Known Mr. Terry for some time, but others are simply personal innuendo’s that have more of the purpose of smearing Mr. Terry‘s reputation, and thus are more difficult to refute.

It appears Mr. O’Toole has no great love for Mr. Newman, and this is obvious by Mr. O’Toole taking a not so subtle shot at Mr. Newman’s “Virtual Protest” in his opening line of the article. Mr. O’Toole unabashedly also calls Mr. Newman and opportunist, and also states Mr. Newman has made patently false allegations against Mr. Terry, while claiming the moral ground of being the new leader of Operation rescue. Mr. O’Toole even goes a step further, and quotes one of his colleagues, Pro life business man Joseph Costello “Why they just didn’t use their own name to fight abortion. The answer is obvious: money. Mr. Terry branded the Operation rescue name, and with it these men are profiting”.

Here we have another pro lifer who has a great deal of credibility calling out the poor behaviors of another so called pro life leader on issues of integrity. If Mr. Newman’s work is so innovative, that it will actually bring about the overturning of Roe and Doe, then why would Mr. Newman need to take the moniker of another man and have to use this to have credibility? I agree wholeheartedly with Mr. Costello in that Mr. Newman should stand on his own merits, and call his organization something other than OR. There would be no need to steal Mr. Terry’s identity for credibility, and fundraising matters if Mr. Newman could do this on his own.

The problem here is that Mr. Newman used the Operation Rescue (west) moniker in the beginning of his career, and it was more likely the name association than anything else that garnered Mr. Newman the attention and pro life ‘gigs’ he now has. The organization Mr. Newman operates is nowhere near what Operation Rescue was when Randall Terry was leading. It is obvious by looking at the fruits of both of the organizations, that Mr. Newman is utilizing the name to enhance his credibility rather than he giving credibility to the name.

This is also evidenced in the fact that Mr. Newman finds it necessary to belittle, and in some cases outright lie about Randall Terry. This is very similar to playground behaviors, in which the overmatched child is left with the option of name calling, and threats. If Mr. Newman truly has built an organization of national status, then he should be proud enough to give it a name that reflects HIS efforts, and not that of another.

Mr. Newman takes shots at Mr. Terry, but fails to recognize his own contradictions. Late last year, Mr. Newman sent out a fundraising letter, signed by him, that states he had fears of the organization possibly shutting down for lack of money, and was so broke that “I cannot pay attention”. Within a few weeks, there were press releases sent out stating that this was not the case, and that the MEDIA had ‘misinterpreted’ Mr. Newman’s statements. I don’t know about you, but if I receive a letter from an organization, signed by the president of said organization, I would presume he knows what he is talking about. I would have no interest in donating to an organization in which the president is using ‘double speak’ to accomplish his goals and it appears that is what happened in this case. Mr. Newman used the same tactics on the media and critics as on Mr. Terry, and that begins to reflect the true character of Mr. Newman. It appears he does not see the ‘log’ in his own eyes, but can sure bark up a storm concerning the speck in others.

This, Mr. Newman, is what is causing credibility problems in the Wichita organization. Trashing another’s reputation to uplift your own is very unchristian behavior as well as showing the true poverty of thought and action on the organization’s part. Get out there and actually do something of value, and prove you are the national leader you claim to be. It’s also interesting that others are seeing this behavior as well, and are also calling it what it is: false.

WHAT IS OPERATION RESCUE?

George Offerman

There have been many allegations made concerning the war over the name Operation Rescue, and much of the contention seems to revolve around what Operation Rescue is, its mission, and who has the ‘God given right” to use this well known moniker. Currently, Troy Newman has the trademark on the name, and is making a claim that he has been using this name since 1991. Mr. Newman has also made the claim that he has ‘rebuilt’ OR to national prominence, and is following on the original ‘vision’ of what OR is and what made it so formidable.

Since this claim is made, it is fair to take a look at this organization and do a compare /contrast of what it was and what it currently is, and if in fact if it is staying true to the original vision of the founder Randall Terry. The sources of information used will be the book wrath Of Angels, information off of both websites, operationrescuetheft, and Mr. Newman’s website, newsletters from OR/ORW and fundraising letters, as well as personal testimony and experiences of those who have known both men for many years.

Operation Rescue was the brainchild of Randall Terry in1986 and he became very active in his hometown of Binghamton, NY. Relatively unknown, he nonetheless became prominent in the movement in short order, and built upon the legacy of people like John Ryan, John O’Keefe and Joan Andrews Bell. Mr. Terry was able to do what no one else was able to do before, and that was to mobilize thousands against the child killers. Mr. Terry called this movement Operation Rescue, and this movement became nationally prominent from 1987 to 1994, until the Clinton Administration, lead by Janet Reno, passed and used the FACE (Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances) mainly to deter the winning strategy of Operation Rescue. This was Mr. Terry’s impact on the pro life movement, and the lists below are the highlights of Operation Rescue, under its founder and at its pinnacle.

- Took activism to a new level by having thousands in front of multiple abortuaries in several cities simultaneously.

- 70,000 arrests over the span of 1987-1993, the most ever recorded in national history for a non violent movement.

- 40 + Affiliate offices throughout the country.

- Linked the gospel and scriptures to action and able to mobilize the evangelical world to the movement

- Changed the way law enforcement dealt with the large number of non violent protestors.

- FACE law enacted as a direct result of OR tactics, changing national laws.

- Politicians being held accountable for their pro life stances, and fearing rejection by this organization if wayward in their word.

This was the mission and the goals of Operation Rescue as envisioned by its founder Randall Terry, and it was very successful until the myriad of law suits by planned parenthood and others, as well as the FACE law, effectively broke the back of the movement. Mr. Terry saw this organization as a national movement; with thousands of pro lifers all over the United States fighting in their communities and operating under the Moniker of Operation Rescue (name your city/state). There was no issue concerning trademarks, as everyone at the time was very aware of who started the movement and who was responsible for the exponential growth.

Mr. Terry owned the name Operation Rescue. Operation Rescue was the title of his book. Operation rescue never was a not for profit corporation with a board. Why not, you ask? It was Mr. Terry’s intention to shield these leaders by having a loose association, and not having the organization in a formal structure, in which others could have been sued, and lose everything, as Mr. Terry has.

Interestingly enough, Mr. Newman’s name is not mentioned anywhere in the history of Operation Rescue during its heyday, nor does it appear he was involved in the movement in at least any leadership role until much later.

The name of Operation Rescue was used by many people; it was understood that it was permissible to use this moniker by adding a city or state behind it, such as Operation Rescue Boston, or Rev. Flip Benham’s Operation Save America. In fact, Mr. Terry helped Rev. Tucci start Operation Rescue National. Operation Rescue has not been used by anyone other than Randall Terry, as a stand alone name until Mr. Newman dropped the West from the name of his California organization in 2007. The majority of pro lifers know that Operation Rescue is associated with Randall Terry, and most believe that Operation Rescue has always been on the cutting edge of the pro life movement, attracting people from all over the country to do things they did not know they were capable of doing. Operation Rescue under Randall Terry was also radical, in that it caused a crisis of consciousness and brought the issue of legalized child killing front and center. OR could not be ignored by the mainstream media or pundits, and no one ever knew what OR would be up to next, but whatever it did, it made national, and sometimes international news.

Now, consider the organization that brands itself Operation Rescue today, and see if it meets the criteria and ‘national standing’ that Mr. Newman claims. Mr. Newman moved headquarters of what was known as Operation Rescue West to Wichita, Kansas in 2002 to directly challenge and close the Women’s Health Care Services, and land George Tiller in jail. For the past 7 + years, this has been the main thrust of Mr. Newman’s energies and that of the Wichita organization. During this time, Mr. Newman also built up a fleet of truth trucks, and has had some success with them. I contributed thousands of dollars to Mr. Newman’s efforts over many years, as well as influencing others to do the same.

Mr Newman’s efforts have been commendable. But the question must be asked: do his efforts meet the criteria and purpose of Operation Rescue, as envisioned by its founder, and those who followed Mr. Terry in the leadership? Mr. Newman’s Wichita organization is focused on a local to regional matter, with the main focus being George Tiller, as evidenced by nearly all of the newsletters and fund raising letters sent out over the past 7 + years. Very little to nothing was mentioned about civil disobedience on a large national scale, nor was there ever a plan in place in which people felt like they could get behind this organization believing it would lead to the overturning of Roe and Doe.

This is what the Mr. Newman’s organization in Wichita has accomplished up until now. The claim to have built the organization back up to its ‘national prominence’ can be tested by looking at the fruits of this organization.

- Little evidence or news stories supporting any efforts at protests at multiple locations simultaneously.

- Very few recorded arrests during the time span of 1999-2010

- Wichita is the only office location in the country with 4 staff and no affiliates.

- Virtual protests instead of actual protests promoted.

- Has made virtually no national news in 7 + years other than the reported association with Roeder after the Tiller shooting.

- Have influenced local and Kansas laws, but not national legislation.

- Politicians do not fear this organization or any other current pro life organization and are not concerned about their endorsements or reprimand.

- No written action plan for ending legalized child killing.

These are just some of the differences in considering Operation Rescue (Randall Terry) as it was at its inception, and what Mr. Newman is doing with the name. There is a stark contrast to the activities and levels of accomplishments. It is apparent that Mr. Newman’s Wichita organization is benefiting from the use of the name Operation Rescue, as it has built in credibility and is nationally known, but not because of their efforts. It is interesting that Mr. Newman decided to trademark the name of another man’s labor, efforts and sacrifices instead of focusing on his own brand of activism, and standing on his own accomplishments.

In considering whether the Operation Rescue ‘brand’ is tarnished, as many anti lifers, and some pro lifers believe, it is really incumbent upon the beholder to make this determination. If one considers the regional efforts and successes of Mr. Newman and company and if this is applied and packaged as a national movement, then the answer is yes, it is tainted and out of date. If Mr. Newman’s efforts are seen in the light of a regional affiliate of a larger vibrant organization, then the answer would have to be that the OR brand is alive and well.

It would seem if one looks at the evidence provided, and does some research, it would become very apparent that Mr. Newman’s accomplishments, although very formidable and positive, do not in any way shape or form, represent a national organization that is on the cutting edge of ending legalized child killing, as it is not being duplicated anywhere. Duplication is what a national organization has if it is to be effective and effect change in society. Mr. Newman should drop the Operation Rescue moniker, as he does not represent what Operation Rescue is, and should name his organization in alignment with his own accomplishments.

OPERATION RESCUE'S UNCHRISTIAN BEHAVIOR

George Offerman

The Scott Roeder trial has created a firestorm in which the majority of the pro life groups are falling all over themselves to ‘distance’ themselves from what Roeder did. The unintended consequences of this action, however, have the negative impact of throwing out the fact that what Tiller did was the whole reason Roeder did what he did. In this, the pro life groups are going along with the prosecution in that child killing is off the table as an issue of debate. Obviously, as Christians, we may disagree on this point, but our debates and comments should remain within a respectable brotherhood and be done in Charity and dignity.

However, the advisory board of Operation Rescue, evidently led by the Rev. Patrick Mahoney takes this to an extreme, in which they (the board, or whoever actually writes this press release) unloaded a personal attack on Randall Terry. This memo is thick with intentionally emotional and attacking language, and a search of their archives shows they never even came close to showing Tiller the disrespect they are heaping on Randall Terry. This is a personal vendetta, and there is nothing conciliatory in their language, that would convince even the greatest skeptic that this is not an intentional hatchet job. Here is the press release in its entirety:

WICHITA, Kan., Jan. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Yesterday, Randall Terry, who is regrettably traveling to the Roeder trial in Wichita, stated in a news release, "We are not coming to condone or condemn Scott Roeder's actions," and dared to compare Roeder to the Civil War figure John Brown.

The Advisory Board of Operation Rescue issues the following statement on Randall Terry's refusal to condemn violence.

"The Board of Operation Rescue wants to make it clear that Randall Terry has no affiliation or involvement with Operation Rescue. That has been the case for over 17 years.

"Sadly, Randall Terry has chosen to abandon the Christ-centered principles contained in the historic Operation Rescue Pledge of Non-violence. By refusing to condemn the actions of Scott Roeder, Mr. Terry has completely abandoned the core principles of Operation Rescue.

"Mr. Terry's relentless thirst for media attention has led him down a road of extremism, fringe actions, and bizarre media stunts which have isolated him from the pro-life community and the timeless principles of an organization he helped establish.

"Our prayer is that Randall will return to a place of humility and sanity and once again embrace the cross of Christ and stop choosing to be involved in cheap and pathetic public relation stunts that harm the pro-life message."

SOURCE Operation Rescue

As one can see, this memo focuses more on the ‘lack of character’ of Mr. Terry, than it does the merits of Mr. Terry’s arguments, or purpose of being there. The interesting thing is that those who are responsible for this press release are supposed Christians in good standing. Yet they are engaging in personal attacks, and then attempting to hide behind the Christianity moniker. To those, or to who penned this memo: You are the arbiter of justice and humility and you have the authority to determine who is repentant and who is a lost sinner? Where did you get this authority? Arrogance.

It is Operation Rescue that is looking unchristian and petty, by writing and publicly releasing this trash into the debate. Disagreeing with Mr. Terry’s tactics is one thing, the personal attacks, especially in the name of Christianity, is so unbecoming of the true Cross of Christ and Christian Charity that it reeks of hypocrisy and hate. And these people believe they are at the forefront of ending legalized child killing? They believe they are the model of solid Christian behaviors?

Again, read the memo, and take in how much is focused on the trial, and how much is focused on the comments made about Randall Terry and his ‘character’.

I have been accused of many things since writing about some of the issues I have with Operation Rescue, but I have kept it on the factual course, by pointing out problems with their press releases, and asking questions that are pertinent for a donor to an organization. I, in return, have received insulting and condescending e-mails, and had strong hate mail sent my way, that I have not printed or published or even discussed other than the initial correspondences with Troy Newman (and even some of that was edited). I have not returned in kind what I have received from Operation Rescue, or its backers, and have attempted to get answers from an organization that is beginning to appear more suspect the more I attempt to get answers to very basic questions. These are not qualities of a well run Christian organization, and they sure are not qualified to discuss the character of others, when they themselves have questionable tactics, release trash that mimics a press release as seen above, and responds only with mocking and condescending tones when asked straight forward questions.

The irony of this is, that Operation Rescue and many who support them see what I have written as an ‘attack’, yet they spin their personal vendettas as ‘facts’ and do it, supposedly in the ‘humility of Christ”. Only in the land of make believe and double speak does this have any merit. It is incredible that not only do they do to others what they themselves do but claim they don’t, but then they make claims that others, who point out their unchristian behaviors, are being evil, and unchristian, and thus end up becoming their whipping posts. I, for one, have about had it with this behavior, and also have about had it with those who back this bad behavior. We have this epidemic of child killing going on, and there are those, such as the advisory board of Operation Rescue, too busy wanting to trash those who are doing something about it.

So, the e-mail, phone calls or whatever else comes my way concerning this posting, I will publish and discuss them in their entirety in this forum. I am going to call those people out by name, and demand they address the issues that are relevant and to the point, and refrain from personal attacks and name calling. I will focus on their hypocritical and sinful behavior, and call it what it is.

My message is simple and clear: back those up willing to do something about ending legalized child killing, and leave the personal vendettas at home. If the organizations want to act in an unchristian manner, then I will gladly point it out in a public forum.

******
One last comment pertaining to a statement made by ‘the advisory board’ and that is the claim of ‘returning to a place of humility and SANITY’. I don’t know who made this statement, but I want to know who has the clinical experience and can legally make a psychiatric diagnosis on someone. I am licensed in my state where I practice clinical social work, and have the authority to diagnose mental disorders. Whoever is making a claim of Mr. Terry’s ‘insanity’ better be licensed and better be prepared to back this claim legally. I take great exception to this statement, and it better be recanted by the board, and an apology forthcoming very soon.
